Eddie Tallon for House District 33

Eddie Tallon wants to add the state House of Representatives to his resume, and his track record has earned him the chance to replace the retiring Lanny Littlejohn.

Tallon, 65, has worn a wide variety of hats during a career split between public service and the private sector.

"I've always been on the cusp of politics," Tallon said, "but not actually in it."

Tallon served in the Air Force and the Florence County Sheriff's Office before spending 17 years with the S.C. Law Enforcement Division. He then became executive director of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers Association and an executive for Ryan's in security and loss prevention before forming the Tallon Group, which consults on security and loss prevention issues.

Tallon called himself "conservative but independent." He said he is running because he can do a good job of representing the people and has reached the point in his life where he has the time and the inclination for it.

He wants to see zero-based budgeting and a constitutional spending limit in state government and use his expertise to further economic development.

Tallon faces Weldon Davis, 52, in a Republican primary that will pick the representative, as there is no Democratic candidate. Davis, superintendent at The Creek golf course, sought the same seat against Littlejohn in 2008 running as a Democrat.

Davis is a passionate advocate for children's rights and school funding and argues that officials should face more accountability and take more responsibility.

It is Tallon's experience and knowledge that make him the better choice, and should help him to serve District 33 well.  ©Spartanburg Herald Journal

Friday's letters: A man of principle

Published: Friday, May 21, 2010 at 3:15 a.m.

This letter is in regard to Eddie Tallon, candidate for S.C. House District 33. Many years ago, I was a student at Spartanburg Methodist College, majoring in criminal justice. Mr. Tallon was one of my instructors and also a SLED agent. He worked all day in an environment most of us only see on television and then came to the college to teach. He was always very enthusiastic and encouraging to us, taking the time to help us learn and move forward with our careers.

I found myself in a situation that caused me to have to withdraw from school. Through tears, I explained to Mr. Tallon that I had to leave. He never judged me. Instead, he told me what great potential I had and made me promise him I would return to school one day. I have carried that conversation with me through the years. I was so grateful that he chose to encourage a young girl who was lost instead of making her feel her life and dreams were over.

I finally graduated from SMC in 2003, and in December 2009 I graduated from Limestone College with a double degree in criminal justice and psychology. Because Mr. Tallon believed in me, it allowed me to believe in myself.

I had noticed the campaign signs and wondered whether could it be the same Eddie Tallon who taught me so many years ago, and thankfully it was. I was finally able to thank him for believing in me. He's a prime example of the type of person we need in office. He cares about those he represents, including our youths. He's a man of his word and a man of principle. Thank you again, Mr. Tallon. I know you will be an asset to our county and our state.
